Strengthening drunken driving laws and increasing taxes on alcohol appear to help curb alcohol abuse in the United States according to the Lancet review.
In 1984, when federal law changed the drinking age to 21, more than half of fatal crashes among drivers aged 15 to 20 were alcohol related. By 1994, after the new law had been in effect, that number had dropped to 22 percent.
States and communities are also developing educational strategies to alert consumers to the risks of mixing alcohol with energy drinks and CCTs (Caffeinated Alcoholic Beverages). One community has enacted an ordinance requiring retailers to post signs warning of the risks of CCTs. Effective population-based strategies for preventing excessive alcohol consumption and related harms should be implemented, including increasing alcohol excise taxes, limiting alcohol outlet density, and maintaining existing restrictions on days of sale.
At the same blood alcohol level, older adults may feel some of the effects of alcohol more intensely than younger people.
