  • Over time, excessive alcohol use can lead to the development of chronic diseases, neurological impairments and social problems. These include but are not limited to: Cardiovascular problems, including myocardial infarction, cardiomyopathy, atrial fibrillation and hypertension.
  • Alcoholism seems to run in families; it appears that this suggests a genetic cause; however, many things run in families that are not genetic, which casts dispersions on this prominent theory.
  • What Is Binge Drinking? Binge alcohol use is defined as drinking five or more drinks on the same occasion on at least 1 day in the past 30 days (from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health [NSDUH]). Heavy drinking is defined as binge drinking on at least 5 days in the past month.
  • Nonstudent, nonmilitary personnel may be more likely to continue alcohol abuse into adulthood, as these individuals do not have access to institutionally based programs that typically serve college students and military personnel.
