Why Is Underage Drinking Dangerous? Underage drinking is a major cause of death from injuries among young people. Each year, approximately 5,000 people under age 21 die as a result of underage drinking; this includes about 1,900 deaths from motor vehicle crashes, 1,600 as a result of homicides, 300 from suicide, and hundreds from other injuries such as falls, burns, and drownings.
Adolescents, age 12 to 17, who consume alcohol are more likely to report behavioral problems, especially aggressive, delinquent and criminal behaviors.
Alcohol is a major factor in unprotected sex among youth, which significantly raises their risk of contracting HIV or other transmitted diseases.
According to the Center on Marketing and Youth, over three million young adults that are under the age of 25 are alcoholics; several million more are reported to have a serious drinking problem that they cannot manage on their own.
