  • Alcoholics may experience damage to their brain, higher blood pressure, nerve damage, heart muscle damage, pancreatitis, erectile dysfunction (men), birth defects in children, fetal alcohol syndrome (women), depression, bleeding of the esophagus and increased risk for cancer.
  • People that are taking certain prescription or over-the-counter medications that can interact with alcohol should not drink alcohol.
  • An estimated 5,000 people under the age of 21 die as a result of underage alcohol drinking each year. This includes about 1,900 deaths from motor vehicle crashes, 1,600 as a result of homicides, 300 from suicide, and hundreds from other injuries such as falls, burns, and drowning.
